Why Pakistani Banks Block Forex Withdrawals

The increasing frustration of many Pakistani traders has also been encountered when local banks reduce their limits on withdrawals related to forex which have become a hot debate within the online trading circles. The problem, as it is seen in the industry, lies in the increasing regulatory pressure and the increasing concerns regarding the unverified transactions that pass through the foreign exchange platforms. The failure of these people involved in online trading to withdraw their income has left people confused and aggravated those who have gone through the traditional procedures of verification.

The regulators and the financial institutions justify these moves as being done to control the laundering of money and to enforce adherence to the global money standards. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has continuously reiterated that the transactions in offshore forex accounts and platforms that are not registered in the country should be subjected to oversight. Most traders however claim that fair forex withdrawals are being unduly held or rejected in the same measure as suspicious activity. This increasing mistrust between banks and clients has contributed toward the suspicion over the overall financial system to handle digital trading revenue.

On most occasions, merchants are finding their withdrawals are being put on further cross-examination when they come through brokers or trading applications located beyond Pakistan. According to banks, the policies would help in avoiding capital flight and in safeguarding the little foreign reserves that the country has. However, critics are of the view that the blanket effect of the restrictions impacts on thousands of small traders who depend on the transactions to earn their livelihood. There have been frustrations in the process due to the absence of clear communication of the banks and inconsistency in implementation of the same in one branch to the other, leaving many people at a loss on how to access their funds within the law.

One forex broker who was privy to the scenario told me that the issue is partly caused by the fact that Pakistan does not have a single structure in which digital trading flows are managed. Lack of official guidelines to direct foreign-based trading accounts results in banks having to issue a case-by-case judgement and usually leaning towards the conservative side. Such uncertainty has left an unequal terrain whereby there are clients who have managed to access some funds and there are those who are denied a chance of accessing funds repeatedly with no explanations. The forex broker observed that the lack of policy clarity has seen traders being more reliant on informal ways, which are associated with their own risks.

Other traders have also turned to using e-wallets or cryptocurrency in place of it hoping to avoid restrictions and get money sooner. Although these solutions provide a soothing moment in the short term, they also subject the users to more regulatory dangers, with governments continually increasing their monitoring of digital property. Market analysts caution that such workarounds may attract still tighter financial scrutiny in the long run making it all the more difficult to access legitimate forex earnings. The increased use of these informal means of operation shows a gap between the banking system of Pakistan and the worldwide internet trading world.

Analysts believe that the only way of rebuilding confidence is by ensuring better communication between regulators, banks and traders. A regulated arrangement where there is an option to withdraw money in forex by using registered brokers would make things easier and eliminate the exploitation of the financial loopholes. It is through such a framework that a good number of Pakistani traders will find it easier to perceive the local banks as obstacles, instead of assisting agents in the global trading environment. This state of affairs highlights a bigger problem facing the financial sector in the country where the issue of sustaining regulatory control and at the same time allowing legal access to foreign markets have to co-exist.
